Early American Candle Making Workshop
Daniel Boone Homestead 400 Daniel Boone Rd, Birdsboro, PA, United StatesJoin the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates for their first annual Early American Candle Making & Educational Workshop with Heritage Art and Craft Studio. Journey back in time with Greg and Peggy Geesaman to learn the art of crafting candles with natural beeswax. Participants will take part in the careful and significant process of candle dipping, a traditional Early American method, as they create your own double wick 100% beeswax hand-dipped candle. In addition, participants will make a 5″ cinnamon scented display ornament, by a method similarly used by German Lebkuchen Bakers in the sixteenth century from a Stoneware Cookie mold (designs vary). A Historic Presentation from Colonial period interpreters during class will reveal some interesting facts about Early American Living and the history of candle making in the eighteenth century. Heritage Art and Craft Studio is co-owned by Greg Geesaman and Peggy Allen-Geesaman. For over fifty years, Greg has dedicated himself to the study of American History, as well as gardening, landscaping, agriculture, and environmental preservation. He shares his knowledge with others through educational seminars, classes, and workshops. Peggy, a native of Berks County, has dedicated over 30 years to teaching art and crafts. Before launching her own business in the 1990s, she worked in retail marketing. While she offers a wide range of classes, her true passion lies in Traditional American crafts. She stays informed of current historical trends as a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration (HSEAD). This is a beginner-level workshop and is open to all ages if accompanied by an adult. Registration is required for the workshop, and a form can be obtained by emailing us at thedanielboonehomestead@gmail.com. Daniel Boone Homestead Associate Members $45 and Non-Members $50. Community Day at the John James Audubon Center
John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove 1201 Pawlings Road, Audubon, PA, United StatesSunday, September 20th is Community Day at the John James Audubon Center. Everyone is invited to enjoy food, drinks, and music as we celebrate cultural connections to nature, fall migration, and birds’ unique ability to unite us all. Festivities will include traditional Mexican folk dance, classical Indian dance, activities for kids, bird-themed facepainting and henna tattoos, food trucks, local breweries, canoeing, and more! This year’s Community Day will also coincide with our new fall/winter art exhibit. Tree of Life is a solo exhibition by Natessa Amin featuring bird-inspired artworks from her Split Inheritance series. The project considers the "tree of life" as a symbol that appears across cultures, generations, and histories. A selection of Árboles de la Vida (trees of life) sculptures created by local community art circles and Las Artivistas from CCATE - Center of Culture, Art, Training and Education - will also be on view as part of the Tree of Life exhibition. These Mexican clay sculptures were originally created for religious purposes, but many have expanded to explore themes such as the duality of life and death and humanity’s relationship with nature, while still retaining traditional elements like Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden. Nature Explorers: Art In The Park (6+ years)
Berks Nature 575 St. Bernardine Street, Reading, PA, United StatesDrop your kids off at The Nature Place for a full day of exploring Angelica Creek Park, scientific experiments, and other hands-on activities perfect for the curious, adventure-seeker! Best for children aged 6+. Please pack a lunch and prepare your child appropriately for the outdoors and weather. In October, the Nature Explorers will find their muse in nature and get creative with painting, journaling, and nature mandalas! Each activity will challenge the Explorers to look closely at colors, shapes, and patterns found in the natural world while making "leave no trace" art that does not harm the environment. This hands-on day blends creativity, outdoor exploration, and gentle lessons in stewardship, giving kids a chance to express themselves while appreciating the space around them. Scholarships are available! We believe nature should be accessible and welcoming to all. With the support of our donors, Berks Nature is able to offer scholarships to children hoping to participate in the Nature Explorers program that would otherwise be financially unable to. Drive-In Zoovies: Hocus Pocus
Elmwood Park Zoo 1661 Harding Blvd, Norristown, United States“Oh, look. Another glorious morning. Makes me sick!” We’re hosting a series of special drive-in movie screenings in the Zoo’s parking lot! Our first Drive-In Zoovie in October is Hocus Pocus (1993). See below for tickets and details. Zoovies | Hocus Pocus (1993) | 1hr 36m | Rated PG October 3 | 7:00 PM – Parking Lot Opens | 8:00 PM – Film Begins Tickets and Info* Adult Guest | $15 per adult Child Guest | $12 per child * Guests must indicate how many cars they are bringing when purchasing tickets. Tickets are required for each guest (adult and child) attending. The parking lot will be open at 7 PM, and the film will begin at 8 PM. Our drive-in screenings are held in the former softball field section of the Zoo’s parking lot. Concessions will be available for purchase during the film. In the event of inclement weather, all ticket holders will be notified if a screening is canceled or rescheduled 2 weeks prior to the event. The radio station frequency broadcasting the film’s audio to cars will be provided to ticket holders in advance of the event.

Join us Saturday, October 10 from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM as we learn all about safety and the heroes that serve our community! Fire Smart – Safety Day is presented by Rush Order Tees/Ninja Transfers. This event is free to attend with zoo admission. Community Passes will not be accepted. As always, First responders receive free zoo admission. Current police officers, firefighters, and EMT personnel must show valid credentials at the admission counter. Fire and police badges, identification cards, and responders in uniform are accepted only if accompanied by photo ID. Families attending the event with police officers, firefighters, and EMT personnel will receive a discounted admission rate of $5.00. Discounted family admission rate is only available at the gate.
