    “E.T. phone home.” We’re hosting a series of special drive-in movie screenings in the Zoo’s parking lot! Our September Drive-In Zoovie is E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. See below for tickets and details. Tickets are required for each guest (adult and child) attending. The parking lot will be open at 7 PM, and the film will begin at 8 PM. Our drive-in screenings are held in the former softball field section of the Zoo’s parking lot. Concessions will be available for purchase during the film. In the event of inclement weather, all ticket holders will be notified if a screening is canceled or rescheduled 2 weeks prior to the event. The radio station frequency broadcasting the film’s audio to cars will be provided to ticket holders in advance of the event.

    Join us on Friday, September 18th from 7:30 - 9:30 pm for our Bats Campfire led by educator Chris Egnoto! Look to the skies as bats flutter about finding food in preparation for hibernation. Students will have the chance to explore organizations, companies, and institutions in the aviation industry, and meet professionals in those fields to learn about their careers! Students will get to explore new experiences within new industries as we celebrate, empower, and inspire the future generation of aviators!     History, Archaeology, & Family Fun! A local favorite, the Fall Festival features a wide variety of historic skills and trades demonstrations, archaeological excavations and activities, displays from local historical organizations, hayrides, and hands-on activities for kids of all ages! In addition there will be vendors of handcrafted goods in the Colonial Market, a beer garden, a Community Corner featuring local businesses and organizations, and food vendors. Admission to the Fall Festival is free. Parking is $10 per car. Shuttle buses between the parking area and the festival site will run every 15 minutes throughout the event. Scarecrow Festival on Saturday & Sunday, September 19 & 20 is a weekend of fall family fun including scarecrow-making workshops, pumpkin painting, live musical entertainment, and children’s activities. The event hours are 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. on both days. Peddler’s Village shops will be open until 8 p.m. on Saturday. Admission and parking are free. Event is rain or shine. Learn all about foraging for edible wild plants, the do's and don'ts of foraging, and what nature has to offer us right here in our area. Admission is $5/person, and pre-registration is required as space is limited. This walk may include moderate terrain and the trail may be over a mile. Please dress for the weather and be ready to walk! Adults and kids ages 12 and up are recommended.

  • Early American Candle Making Workshop

    Daniel Boone Homestead 400 Daniel Boone Rd, Birdsboro, PA, United States

    Join the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates for their first annual Early American Candle Making & Educational Workshop with Heritage Art and Craft Studio. Journey back in time with Greg and Peggy Geesaman to learn the art of crafting candles with natural beeswax. Participants will take part in the careful and significant process of candle dipping, a traditional Early American method, as they create your own double wick 100% beeswax hand-dipped candle. In addition, participants will make a 5″ cinnamon scented display ornament, by a method similarly used by German Lebkuchen Bakers in the sixteenth century from a Stoneware Cookie mold (designs vary). A Historic Presentation from Colonial period interpreters during class will reveal some interesting facts about Early American Living and the history of candle making in the eighteenth century. Heritage Art and Craft Studio is co-owned by Greg Geesaman and Peggy Allen-Geesaman. For over fifty years, Greg has dedicated himself to the study of American History, as well as gardening, landscaping, agriculture, and environmental preservation. He shares his knowledge with others through educational seminars, classes, and workshops. Peggy, a native of Berks County, has dedicated over 30 years to teaching art and crafts. Before launching her own business in the 1990s, she worked in retail marketing. While she offers a wide range of classes, her true passion lies in Traditional American crafts. She stays informed of current historical trends as a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration (HSEAD). This is a beginner-level workshop and is open to all ages if accompanied by an adult. Registration is required for the workshop, and a form can be obtained by emailing us at thedanielboonehomestead@gmail.com. Daniel Boone Homestead Associate Members $45 and Non-Members $50.   • Open Hearth Cooking: The Bake Oven

  • Community Day at the John James Audubon Center

    John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove 1201 Pawlings Road, Audubon, PA, United States

    Sunday, September 20th is Community Day at the John James Audubon Center. Everyone is invited to enjoy food, drinks, and music as we celebrate cultural connections to nature, fall migration, and birds’ unique ability to unite us all. Festivities will include traditional Mexican folk dance, classical Indian dance, activities for kids, bird-themed facepainting and henna tattoos, food trucks, local breweries, canoeing, and more! This year’s Community Day will also coincide with our new fall/winter art exhibit. Tree of Life is a solo exhibition by Natessa Amin featuring bird-inspired artworks from her Split Inheritance series. The project considers the "tree of life" as a symbol that appears across cultures, generations, and histories. A selection of Árboles de la Vida (trees of life) sculptures created by local community art circles and Las Artivistas from CCATE - Center of Culture, Art, Training and Education - will also be on view as part of the Tree of Life exhibition. These Mexican clay sculptures were originally created for religious purposes, but many have expanded to explore themes such as the duality of life and death and humanity’s relationship with nature, while still retaining traditional elements like Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden.
