  • Family Creek Critter Day

    Take the plunge with your whole family and spend the afternoon exploring Angelica Creek! Use nets and buckets to gently dip into the water in search of macroinvertebrates - tiny, aquatic critters who can tell us a lot about the health of their aquatic home. Together we will collect and identify these fascinating creatures. Side-by-side, kids and adults will look closely at how one creek can support life of all sizes. It will be a day of exploring, hands-on science, and plenty of splashing, so come prepared to get wet! Please note, end times are approximate. Registration ends Thursday, July 23, 2026

  • Kids Dig History

    Kids Dig History is back this summer starting on June 27! Get your hands dirty at the archaeology dig and in the kitchen garden. Screen dirt to look for artifacts such as redware pottery and animal bones, then help wash and dry brush artifacts in the lab. Try your hand at planting, weeding, or harvesting vegetables. Depending on the day, additional pop-up living history programs will be happening simultaneously.

    This event takes place RAIN OR SHINE! Bring the whole family to the Sanctuary to discover and learn all about local Appalachian flora, fauna, and more at a variety of stations in and around the Visitor Center and Native Habitat Garden. There will also be an interactive live musical program by local musician, Dave Kline. Participants who turn in their completed station passport will be entered to win a prize pack! This event is ADA accessible. 2025 Schedule: 10 AM - 2 PM: Raptor Adaptations in the Visitor Center Meet some of our avian ambassadors Animal Tracks in the Visitor Center Learn to identify the tracks left behind by local forest animals. Migration Station in the Visitor Center Marvel at the magic and mystery of migration! Tree Identification in the Information Pavilion Discover how to identify common trees of the Appalachian forest. Naturalists in the Native Habitat Garden Chat with a Hawk Mountain naturalist about the plants and animals living in the garden and pond. 10:30 AM & 1:30 PM: Raptors Up Close in the Amphitheater Meet some of our avian ambassadors and learn about what makes a raptor! 12:00 PM: Mountain Folk Music for Kids in the Amphitheater Join local musician Dave Kline for interactive immersion into the culture of Appalachian folk music and lore related to the great outdoors.
